Emily Franzen, DO
Emily Franzen, DO, completed her undergraduate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Psychology, with a minor in Biochemistry. She attended Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine where she received her Doctorate of Osteopathic Medicine. One of her most memorable (and funny) experiences from medical school occurred during the 2019 polar vortex. Pipes in the building were bursting, and water and ceiling tiles were falling on students, yet her professor, clad in summer attire, continued to lecture while the fire alarm was going off!
Dr. Franzen grew up in Columbus, Nebraska. She has a cat named Poppy. These days she is busy planning her upcoming wedding. Some of her favorite activities include playing card games, doing puzzles, and fishing. Her musical talents abound – she plays the piano, flute, and clarinet proficiently, and has been known to play the trumpet and vibraphone. Dr. Franzen feels fortunate to have known five generations of women in her family, including her great-great grandmother, and looks to her parents and grandparents as role models. If she hadn’t gone to medical school, she wanted to be an astronaut. She’s most proud of completing her Master of Science in Anatomy while in medical school.
Her fascination with human anatomy was the main reason Dr. Franzen decided to become a physician. She chose Family Medicine because she loves that it is broad scope and offers many opportunities to care for patients of all ages. Her one piece of advice for patients: don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself if you think something is wrong with you.
Dr. Franzen chose Lincoln Family Medicine Program for her residency because of the close-knit group of faculty and residents. She knows that not only will they help her learn to be a better physician but they will also be supportive of both work and home lives. She’s looking forward to having many opportunities to tailor her training to her interests, and doing OB rotations. After residency, Dr. Franzen would like to practice in or around Lincoln, but she feels the door for other opportunities is open.
